Product Details
This Red and Gamchha cotton sujani quilt is comfortable, chic, and a rare find as very few communities make them in this style. It can even be used as a throw in your living space as a bedsheet. Made by rural women from Murshidabad, it took nearly two months to craft using free-style embroidery. The lines are made by an overall running stitch and Fish motifs developed with a lazy daisy stitch. Young women take the time apart from housework and raising children to practice this craft. They take pride in their skills and it offers them a sense of freedom. Some teenage girls even pay for their tuitions with what they earn. Reza, an evangelist and coordinator, manages a co-operative of kantha artists. He trains them and provides them with them raw materials, designs, and customer orders. Seeing the challenges that women from conservative families faced to find jobs that their families would accept, he created a structure that gives them the flexibility to work from home at their own pace.
