Much like the patterns adorning Kashmiri papier Mache crafts, its history, too, is a rich and varied one. A combination of fine art and delicate craft, it is believed that papier Mache was introduced in Kashmir in the 15th century. Since then, the craft itself has inculcated modern sensibilities and ideas, whilst staying true to its essence.
The process, of course, is another story. It takes two sets of artisans to make magic- the Sakhtasaz and the naqqash. While the former makes the object with paper pulp, the latter is charged with the painted ornamentation of the surface. These ornamentations themselves, in fact, are examples of proud legacies, passed on through the ages. Typically seen are flowers, box patterns, jungle motifs, and Kashmiri symbols like almonds and the chinar, a five-pointed leaf.
Perhaps the best part of Kashmiri papier mache crafts is, no two pieces will ever be the same! And, indeed, why should they, each artisan shape the blank canvas as per their imagination and free will. And that’s what makes this craft so special!
