Patwa craft derives its name from the word ‘Pat’, meaning silk—an apt origin for a tradition built around the delicate yet enduring art of threadwork. The Patwa community, historically engaged in working with silk and cotton threads, travelled from village to village—selling their creations and repairing jewellery, embedding their craft deeply into everyday life and celebration.
Steeped in cultural memory, the origins of the craft are also linked to mythology. It is believed that Lord Vishnu himself guided the first Patwa artisans towards creating jewellery using silk threads, establishing a tradition that would evolve across generations.
Traditionally, Patwas worked with gold and silver threads, creating tassels and beaded strings that complemented precious jewellery. Over time, the craft expanded—welcoming vibrant threads, glass, wood and metal beads, as well as semi-precious stones. Today, elements such as oxidised silver and antique gold-toned embellishments add further depth, allowing artisans to create pieces that feel both rooted and contemporary.
At the heart of Patwa craft lies an intricate process of twisting, knotting, and layering threads—often combined with carefully selected beads to form patterns that are both detailed and expressive. Using simple tools such as needles, hooks, and the traditional charkhi, artisans bring remarkable precision to each creation. Depending on the complexity, pieces can range from minimal, bead-strung designs to elaborate compositions requiring careful manipulation of threads and materials.
The range of Patwa creations extends far beyond jewellery. While necklaces, bracelets, and anklets remain central, the craft also finds expression in rakhis, decorative tassels, latkans, parandis, torans, and even wall hangings—each carrying a distinct ornamental character.
