This Pattamadai wedding mat or pattu pai or kalyana pai is painstakingly handwoven using fine cotton threads in the warp and intricately split reeds of korai grass in the weft. The name of the couple and the date of marriage are also woven into the mat, making it a special and unique wedding gift. The unique grass, a sustainable natural fibre, is native to the region and prepared for weaving after a lengthy process of harvesting, drying, soaking, splitting and finally dyeing. The mats are best described as woven poetry. The couple will cherish the mat as a symbol of their love.
