Dokra Art – Handcrafted Lost-Wax Metal Craft from East India

Arguably, it is the sheer virtue of simple yet forceful form that has kept Dokra art resplendent—even 4,000 years later. A continuous thread of folk motifs—horses, elephants, and human figurines—links present-day creations to one of the earliest known metal artefacts, the iconic Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-daro.

Rooted in regions across West Bengal, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, Dokra (also spelled Dhokra) is a traditional metal craft shaped using the ancient lost-wax casting technique. But to attribute its uniqueness solely to process would be incomplete.

The true distinction lies in the details—delicate, hand-applied strands of twisted brass wire that define form, texture, and expression. These fine patterns lend Dokra its unmistakable identity: raw, intricate, and deeply tactile.

Each piece is inherently one-of-a-kind, much like the communities that sustain it—notably the Dhokra Damar tribe, from whom the craft draws its name and legacy. Passed down through generations, this practice continues to evolve while remaining rooted in its origins.

Today, Dokra artefacts move effortlessly between roles—as sculptural décor, collectible objects, and meaningful gifts. Yet at their core, they remain what they have always been: enduring expressions of a living tradition, carrying within them the weight—and wonder—of time.
