Like so many of its contemporaries, the passage of time has wreaked havoc on the art of doll making. For the artisans of West Bengal, though, this is merely a pause on the pages of time. These sutradhars (storytellers) continue to carve a slice of magic with Nutangram wooden dolls. Carved with a single purpose-to preserve (and make flourish) this innocent craft, even as time ticks on rapidly.

A pair of hand carved wooden owls, believed to be a gateway to the goddess of prosperity, mythological figures and gods and goddesses are all symbols of tradition and nostalgia. And of standing united in their love of the craft as well. For, these timeless wall décor pieces take more than a single pair of hands-after being meticulously shaped by the menfolk, the women step in to give these pieces a personality-a colourful one, at that!

These dolls aren’t just that-they’re physical manifestations of vivid imaginations, adorned with a riot of colours. A myriad of motifs giving wings to a maze of imagination. How much more nostalgia could one ask for?
