Each Maheswari saree is a part of the formidable legacy left behind by the great Maratha Queen, Ahilyabai Holkar. Ruling from Maheshwar, a town located on the banks of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, the revered monarch is believed to have designed the initial Maheshwari sarees herself. The exclusive nine-yard sarees were hand woven by master weavers invited from Surat and Malwa. Distinguishing patterns which continue to be entwined in Maheshwari sarees even today include leheriya (wave), eent (brick), chatai (matting) and heera (diamond), among others. All these were inspired by the Narmada River and the adornments on the Maheshwar fort. Every Maheshwari saree carries forward its great aristocratic lineage.
