What began as a card game, played with much fanfare in many parts of the country since the 15th century, Ganjifa cards are now cherished only for their cultural and historical significance. What hasn’t lost its charm through time though, is the beautiful art work that was done on these playing cards. Various versions of the game were developed in different regions with themes like astronomy, mythology, astrology, Puranas, and many more. Each had mythological characters or symbols hand painted on the small, mostly circular playing cards. The vibrant paintings were done using pigments derived from natural resources. Today, larger renditions of the artworks are hand painted on paper and adorn the walls of many discerning households.
