Whether folk-lore or an old wives tale, it is believed that the real knack of making Bidri work lies in tasting the mud used to make the wares. Driven purely by instinct, generations of seasoned artisans have sworn to the veracity of this unusual test. A gift, some say, that is only kept alive in the artisan’s family.

An unusual tasting practice aside, Bidri craft does have other redeeming qualities! Created with the underlying concept of illuminating beauty amongst contrasts, one is usually reminded of a clear, starry night, sparkling in an inky sky. A beautiful visual effect and the pride of Bidar in Karnataka, this "koftagiri" craft form is brought to life by encrusting gold or silver on iron objects.

Apart from adding richness and flavour, this inlaid or overlaid silver, gold or brass serves as a backdrop for many stories to unfold on a subtle backdrop. Tales of flowers, vines, geometric designs, even the odd human figure, all come alive on an expansive, black stage.

Though the passage of time has wrought many changes, the basic beauty and grace of Bidri craft remains untouched and undiminished. The backdrop is the same, just with new players (themes) telling new stories.
